What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a breakthrough treatment that uses a process called cryolipolysis to literally freeze fat cells, allowing the body to naturally flush them away while leaving the surrounding cells unharmed.

CoolSculpting is a great choice for both women and men who want to reduce fat in certain areas without surgery or downtime. This treatment may be right for you if:

CoolSculpting is ideal for smaller “spot treatments” and for patients who want to avoid surgery. However, if you are looking for a larger, more extensive body contouring option and are comfortable undergoing surgery, liposuction may be the better choice for achieving your cosmetic goals.

What to Expect

CoolSculpting is a brief, non-invasive procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis. During the procedure, the area to be treated is drawn between two cooling panels. The panels then deliver an intense blast of cold to the undesired fat cells, which freeze at a higher temperature than other cells. During this time, you will probably feel a pulling sensation, as well as the cold. This is normal.

Treatments usually last around an hour per treatment area. Many patients use the time to catch up on work or simply relax.

Recovery After CoolSculpting

Generally, patients are able and encouraged to return to their normal activities immediately following their treatment. Some patients report redness, bruising, tingling, and cramping in the treated area, but these effects are temporary. In the weeks following the procedure, the frozen cells break down and are processed by the body’s natural cleansing processes. Results are usually visible within 3 weeks but may become more dramatic over the course of 2 to 4 months. Patients are often satisfied with the results of just one CoolSculpting session, but most opt for a series of 4 or more treatments for optimal results.

After CoolSculpting, the treated fat cells die and are flushed out of the body. CoolSculpting is clinically proven to eliminate up to 20% to 25% of treated fat cells with each session.
Many patients are satisfied after just a single treatment. However, during your consultation, we can discuss a treatment plan to meet your specific treatment needs.
To initiate the treatment, we will position the device on your body. The device will then draw the bulge up between two cooling panels. The sensation is a firm pull and pressure – enough of a pull to ensure the selected tissue will be cooled most efficiently. An hour or so later, depending on your needs, you’re done.
As the procedure begins, patients feel intense cold and possibly pulling, pinching, or tingling; these sensations subside in about 5 to 10 minutes as the targeted area becomes numb. Most patients are generally comfortable and often spend their session reading, watching videos, or even napping!
CoolSculpting is completely nonsurgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Oftentimes, patients return to work after the session is over.
You may start to see changes as quickly as 3 weeks after your treatment. The most dramatic results develop after 1 to 3 months. The body continues to flush damaged fat cells for up to 4 to 6 months after treatment.
