BELKYRA® (Double Chin Treatment)
Millions of people are bothered by the presence of a double chin. As “selfies” and social media become more pervasive, so do many of our aesthetic concerns. One new option, BELKYRA (called KYBELLA in the United States), is a double chin injection available here at Cosmedica in Burlington for our patients from Hamilton, Oakville, and other Ontario communities. This injectable treatment dissolves unwanted fat for a long-term improvement in your profile.
About Submental Fullness
BELKYRA is approved by Health Canada to reduce “submental fullness” — the fat that creates a double chin. Submental fullness is exceptionally frustrating for many people because it’s often unresponsive to diet and exercise. Indeed, many people who visit our office in hopes of treating their double chins are otherwise slender and fit.
BELKYRA uses an active ingredient called deoxycholic acid to break down and dissolve treated fat. The safety of deoxycholic acid has been well established. In fact, it’s manufactured naturally by the liver to help us digest the fats we eat. When administered to unwanted fat for cosmetic purposes, the active ingredient goes to work breaking it down, allowing it to be naturally filtered out of the body.
Although BELKYRA is an innovative, effective option for reducing a double chin, certain patients may be better candidates for CoolSculpting® or liposuction of this area. Dr. Weiglein and his nurses help you learn more about your various options during your consultation.
What to Expect
Your appointment begins with a thorough assessment and discussion of your expectations. Following skin cleansing a grid pattern to guide the injection sites is carefully marked on the treatment area. Each injection lasts for only a moment, and the entire appointment typically lasts less than 1 hour.
After your appointment, you’re free to pick up your day where you left off. You can safely head back to work, home, or even the gym. Swelling is to be expected and typically lasts about 4 days or more. You may experience some redness, tenderness, or bruising, but these symptoms typically go away on their own within a few days.
For the best results, BELKYRA requires a series of 2 to 4 treatments, typically spaced several weeks apart. Results gradually appear during the weeks and months following treatment.

What are the risks?
BELKYRA is a very safe product, and, when administered under the supervision of a physician such as Dr. Weiglein, the risks of any adverse effects are quite low. Mild side effects are normal and typically confined to the injection sites. They diminish within a couple of days. Very rarely, infection and long-term nerve damage can occur.
How long will my results last?
Unlike injectable fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic, BELKYRA can last indefinitely. This is especially true if you stick to healthy diet and exercise habits and avoid any significant weight fluctuations. The best results are obtained in individuals with moderate fat and good quality submental skin.
Can I have other procedures during the same appointment?
Yes. Depending on your individual concerns, you may be eligible to undergo other injectable treatments or PrecisionTx™ laser treatments in the same session. During your consultation, Dr. Weiglein and his nurses will introduce you to your other options and work with you to develop a treatment plan that addresses each of your concerns in a timely manner.
