Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an outpatient vein treatment we offer patients from Burlington, Hamilton, and beyond at Cosmedica. Spider veins are usually red or purple and very tiny, located near the surface of the skin, and reticular veins are the small blue-green veins which feed into spider veins. Both are common in the legs of adults, and they may appear flat or begin to protrude. Their appearance can make many people feel self-conscious of their legs and cause them to cover up with long pants, even in summer. Sclerotherapy by one of the skilled nurses at Cosmedica is a minor outpatient procedure that can restore the beauty of your legs in only a few brief sessions.

Dr. Otto Weiglein and his team can help you look and feel your best. To learn more about reducing the look of visible veins with sclerotherapy, request a consultation or call Cosmedica at  (905) 631-6288.

Improving Your Confidence

Visible spider and reticular veins occur due to excessive back pressure caused by improper function of the valves in larger veins. This pressure causes a backflow of blood that enlarges and eventually weakens veins. Although the condition is usually hereditary, other contributing factors can include pregnancy, weight gain, stranding for prolonged periods of time, or habitually crossing legs.

Sclerotherapy is performed though a series of injections. Using a fine needle, a nurse injects a special solution into the veins. The solution causes the lining of the blood vessels to swell and close the vein. Once treated, the vein eventually disappears and dissolves.

The results of a sclerotherapy treatment may be enhanced with a body sculpting procedure such as CoolSculpting® or liposuction.

What to Expect

Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure that doesn’t require anesthesia. The treated area is first cleansed. A qualified member of Dr. Weiglein’s medical team carefully injects the sclerotherapy solution into the vein. Thanks to the small needles they use, the procedure is typically quite comfortable. Each treatment session lasts about 30 minutes.

After treatment, redness and bruising can occur but typically disappear within a few weeks. You may also experience an aching feeling in your legs for the first day or 2. We recommend wearing compression garments after treatment for the best results. We offer attractive compression leggings available for purchase that are easy and comfortable to wear. Although rare, possible side effects of sclerotherapy include brown marks on the skin, an allergic reaction to the sclerosing agent, or ulcers. Prior to your procedure, Dr. Weiglein evaluates your risk factors and helps you decide whether sclerotherapy is right for you.

You can expect about a 75% improvement in the appearance of leg veins after several treatments. Veins may sometimes require more than 1 injection before they become less apparent, because larger veins “feed” smaller veins. Larger veins are typically treated first.

While the veins treated by sclerotherapy will not come back, new blood vessels may appear over time due to heredity or lifestyle factors. Therefore, ongoing maintenance may be required. Physical exercise, avoidance of standing for long periods, daily use of compression leggings, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding excessively crossing your legs are all ways to prevent new veins from appearing.
