Even as much of society re-opens with the rollout of Covid-19 vaccinations, many people continue working from home and socializing with friends and family using video platforms such as Zoom. Instead of glancing at ourselves in the mirror once or twice a day, we now spend hours looking at our faces during meetings—and that’s prompting many people to seek surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic treatments such as eyelid surgery and laser skin resurfacing at our Burlington practice.
The ‘Zoom’ Boom
Few people had even heard of Zoom before the pandemic emerged at the beginning of 2020. That changed quickly, and people whose faces were front and centre on their laptop screens day after day suddenly took note of lines, wrinkles, and saggy skin. This triggered a boom in cosmetic procedures. Virtual consultations for cosmetic procedures rose 64 percent for plastic surgeons in North America since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
What Treatments Are Trending?
Another novel development that coincided with relying on Zoom meetings from home was mask-wearing when venturing out. Masks emphasize the areas around the eyes, so it’s no surprise that many people chose to schedule procedures that minimized flaws or signs of aging in those areas. Additionally, masks hide post-op swelling and bruising that occurs after facelift or neck lift procedures.
So, what are the treatments women and men have been seeking? Here are a few:
Laser skin resurfacing: Blemishes and discoloration tend to appear even worse in video calls, concerns that are effectively treated with Halo™ fractional laser treatments. Halo laser procedures attract patients from across the grid. Our Burlington clinic treats patients from Toronto, London, Hamilton, St. Catharine’s, and beyond because it is one of the most exciting laser treatments to emerge in the past several years. It’s fully customizable, so patients can choose a more aggressive treatment with some downtime or gentler procedures that require additional treatment sessions but no downtime. You can see the results of laser skin rejuvenation procedures in our gallery of before-and-after photos.
Injectables: We target frown lines, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles around the eyes with BOTOX® Cosmetic and Nuceiva™ treatments. Younger patients also seek these neuromodulators to prevent the early onset of facial lines by minimizing the movement of muscles that cause them. We often combine dermal fillers with BOTOX or Nuceiva.
Skincare for “maskne”: Have you heard of the phrase “maskne”? It was coined to describe the breakouts that mask-wearers often experience. It’s likely that mask-wearing will continue for the foreseeable future, so it’s important to develop skincare habits that prevent unwanted skin conditions.
Eyelid surgery: There is nothing like having to look at yourself day after day to highlight every bag, crease, and sag in your upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a fairly straightforward procedure that produces remarkable results without a lengthy recovery.
Chemical peels: As with laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels can be adjusted for the patient’s skin condition and whether they prefer multiple treatment sessions with light peels or more medium peels that may require some downtime.
