A youthful neck and jawline result from a combination of elastic skin, minimal fat and an intact contour muscle of the throat.

A loss of any of these elements causes loss of neck contour. This loss of a youthful neck contour can make an invidual look older, shorter and worn-out.

Only surgery - a neck lift can address these indivual problems. Liposuction alone can worsen the problem as the skin will not shrink sufficiently to produce a firm neck contour. The "turkey neck" appearance can only be corrected surgically as there is often a split of the underlying neck muscles which must be repaired.

You may benefit from a neck lift if:

  • you have lost a sharp, well defined jaw line

  • you have vertical bands extending from under the chin to your chest

  • you have marked fatty fullness under the chin

Procedure

The procedure is done under general anesthetic and takes several hours. Incisions are made behind the ears and into the hair line of the upper neck. There is usually a small incision under the chin as well. The neck muscles are tightened, excess fat removed and the skin is redraped laterally. A special head dressing is applied for 24 hours.

What to Expect

The next day you will attend at our office and the head dressing is removed. You can shower and wash your face today.

Medications are prescribed to ensure your comfort. Recovery time is about two weeks, but you'll be up and around after a couple of days.

The incisions will heal over time and be very inconspicuous. The results last for many years and is usually only done once. A neck lift corrects problems up to the jawbone. A neck lift can be done without doing a facelift; howerver, if you have jowels or cheek laxity, a facelift is necessary to correct this problem.

If you have never had a well defined jaw and neckline, then this standard procedure is not appropriate for you. However, Dr Weiglein specializes in facial surgery and can recommend an effective procedure to improve jaw and neckline countour.
