Breasts are a very emotional issue - especially enlarged male breasts.

Fortunately, with the advent of Liposuction, this is now a more readily treatable problem. Combined with surgery to remove excess duct tissue, liposuction ensures a smooth, natural looking final result.

You may benefit from male breast reduction or Gynecomastia surgery if:

  • you have primary enlarged breasts developed in puberty
  • you have secondary gynecomastia as a result of things like obesity, use of certain drugs such as steroids, alcohol, marijuana or any substances that alter normal testosterone/estrogen levels
  • you are prepared to make life style changes that otherwise cause the condition to return

Procedure

Isolated duct tissue behind the nipple can be removed with local anesthetic.

Surgery for correction of enlarged male breasts is done under general anesthetic. The purpose is to remove excess fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts. The chest is not shaven. The procedure involves making a "nipple splitting incision" which is a small incision across the nipple to the edge of the areola that permits the excess duct tissue to be removed.

Liposuction is then performed around the edges of the breast to ensure a smooth, natural-looking final result. This involves one or two entrance points on the chest to allow insertion of the liposuction cannula.

The areolar incisions are then closed with dissolving sutures and small dressings are applied. We do not wrap the chest as this prevents proper air flow to the lungs.

What to Expect

Surgery takes about an hour; you will then be supervised in the recovery room for several hours. A responsible adult is required to accompany you home. You can expect to be back to normal daily activities within a few days but will not be able to do heavy, physical activity for about a month.

It will take about three months before you see the final result of your surgery as this is how long it takes normal skin to shrink following liposuction.

Scars, unfortunately, are a necessary part of any surgical procedure. The incision across the areola heals much better than the incision to the adjacent skin. Usually the areola heals extremely well so that it is not visible when not wearing a T-shirt. Temporary numbness diminishes over the next three months.
